How to Prepare for Your First Laser Hair Removal Appointment

September 12, 2026 · 4 min read

A little prep makes your first laser session safer and more effective. Use this simple before, during, and after checklist.

A successful laser hair removal series starts before you ever sit in the chair. A few simple steps in the weeks leading up to your appointment help protect your skin and get the best possible result.

In the weeks before

  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for about 4 weeks — treated skin should not be tanned or sunburned
  • Stop waxing, plucking, and threading for about 6 weeks (the follicle needs to be intact for the laser to target it)
  • Skip self-tanner and discuss any photosensitizing medications with your provider

The day before and day of

  • Shave the treatment area about 24 hours beforehand — shaving is fine and actually recommended
  • Arrive with clean skin: no lotions, deodorant, or makeup on the area
  • Wear comfortable clothing for easy access to the treatment area

Protecting your results afterward

  • Avoid direct sun for about 2 weeks and apply SPF 30+ daily to treated areas
  • Mild redness or warmth for 24–48 hours is normal
  • Keep shaving between sessions if needed — just avoid waxing or plucking
  • Stay consistent with your session schedule for the best long-term reduction

Frequently asked questions

Should I shave before laser hair removal?

Yes — shave the area about 24 hours before your appointment. Shaving leaves the follicle intact below the surface (which the laser targets) while removing surface hair that could otherwise burn.

Why can't I wax before laser?

Waxing and plucking remove the hair from the follicle, and the laser needs the follicle's pigment to work. Avoid waxing and plucking for about six weeks before treatment.

Can I get laser hair removal in the summer?

You can, but sun exposure and tanning need to be avoided before and after each session. Diligent SPF and sun avoidance are essential year-round.
